Why chaining upgrades is riskier than it looks

Because each upgrade attempt is an independent event, the probability of succeeding at several attempts in a row multiplies down fast — even at a generous 50% per-attempt chance, three in a row succeeding is 12.5%, and five in a row is just above 3%. How is my win chance determined on an upgrader?
