Why basic strategy narrows but doesn’t remove the edge

Under a common rule set, correct basic strategy play brings the house edge down to roughly 0.5%, compared to several percent for a player making intuitive rather than mathematically optimal decisions. That remaining edge comes from a structural rule of blackjack that can’t be strategized away: a player who busts loses immediately, even if the dealer would have busted too on the same round — the dealer only has to react to what’s already happened. Strategy minimizes your disadvantage; it doesn’t reverse it.
