The math behind a 25-tile grid

The standard mines layout is a 5x5 grid (25 tiles) with a chosen number of hidden mines. Your odds of revealing a safe tile at any given step are exactly (remaining safe tiles) / (remaining total tiles) — pure combinatorics, no hidden variable beyond the mine count you picked at the start of the round.

(“Chance first 3 reveals are all safe” is the product of each step’s own conditional probability against the shrinking grid — e.g. for 5 mines: 20/25 × 19/24 × 18/23 ≈ 49.6%.)

Why the multiplier accelerates

Each additional safe reveal you attempt carries worse odds than the one before it, since the grid shrinks but the mine count stays fixed — with 5 mines, your first reveal is 80% safe, but by the 15th reveal only 10 tiles remain and 5 are mines, a 50% shot. A fair payout curve has to grow multiplicatively to compensate for this falling per-step probability, which is why mines multipliers climb slowly at first and then much faster deeper into a round.

Choosing a mine count

More mines means worse per-step odds but a steeper multiplier for each successful reveal — it’s a variance choice, not a way to find better expected value, since platforms build their margin into the payout curve regardless of mine count selected. A low mine count (1-3) gives frequent, modest multiplier growth; a high mine count (15+) gives rare, large jumps per successful reveal with a much higher chance of hitting a mine early.
